Thank to everyone for the numerous and quick responses - ranging from "no problem, don't worry about it" to "all your brakes might be totally screwed" :-)

What sounds most likely is just that the front pads are worn out and are asking for a replacement. I'll check with my future father in law to see if this makes any sense (although he is smarting from a fresh tranny install).

Although my fiance just told me that he may have had the brakes done just last year... hmmm... anyway, thanks for all the tips.
