Two big pipes run right up the middle of the van, passing through the tunnel in the middle of the fuel tank. On yours probably plastic, earlier ones metal. The plastic ones tend to fail where the ends have reinforcements.

Suspect not related -- may be from RV antifreeze (dunno about smell) spill, or previous spill or leak from rear heater etc. Get underneath with a light and check out the pipes.
