Having come from that general area, my suggestion would be to trade the
unlimited miles for unlimited time.  Plan your arrival for about
November. I-40 follows what used to be Rte 66.  That would be my choice.
Take it slow and follow the side roads.  Unload the Vanagon every now
and again and explore.
