Larry,
I have used two different Garmin recievers for this, using Delorme's
software, and plugging the recievers into a laptop via serial port.
Generally no problems, but I do remember having to tweak certain settings
to get the software to see the units. Sorry, don't remember what.
Just another of Bill Gates' little timesaving gifts to us.
But my preferred method (and I use GPS for my river work all the time)
is to use one of Garmin's receivers that accepts map downloads (e.g.
the "12Map". You can install detailed maps (USGS 1:100,000) for a fairly
large area by downloading from your laptop. Disconnect the laptop and
you simply turn the unit on and you're working - no laptop
or cables. And the detail is as good as with the laptop, though you
do lose the bells and whistles the laptop has (like having it talk you
through the route). But so much simpler, and the whole thing fits in
your shirt pocket (or gets velcroed to your Vanagon dash in my case).
You also have an accurate speedometer, compass, and trip odometer to boot.
Downside is that the receiver and software/maps may run over $300 - haven't
priced lately. Only works with Garmin's proprietary maps and software.
