Doug is right. Buy the nicest one you can afford and start from there.
If you have to pay someone to do the work, forget about it. Really, what
is an '81 Vanagon worth in mint shape? You'll put more than that in
upholstery alone. Screwed up wiring is a nightmare!

Take your money and buy one that doesn't need restoration --- cheaper and
much less aggravation.
