I'm surprised to hear about these problems... i've had about 4 different radios in my '84 westy (stolen, sounded like crap, didn't solve the problem, then wanted cool factor...) All of them fit fine. There is a little Y shaped bracket that screws on to the vent cover plate right behind the ash tray. Just bend that back a little. Also, watch where that tangle of wires behind the radio goes... that can get really crammed in there and prevent you from fully seating the radio.
