The pilot bearing is what lets the transmission input shaft and the engine crankshaft rotate seperately when the clutch is disengaged. If it's seized, it makes things act like your clutch is always engaged. Happened to me once on a '75 bus. It had been growling with the clutch in for a couple weeks before.
