Steve, my man, if you want to get it truly clean, you have little choice than
to do what you don't want to do.  A thorough rinse might be more important
than the detergent used.  It takes copious amounts of water to thoroughly rinse
the fabric.  One of my wife's toys is a Speed Queen commercial front loader
which the vendor calls a washer-extractor.  It has one wash cycle and three
rinse cycles.  The correctness of that control scheme was recently proven to me
when I used it to wash the upholstery from some really grubby jumpseats complete
with a grande latte stain as big as a pizza.  They came out as clean as new.
The only problem is, by comparison, the rest of the interior now looks like
shit.
