Subject: Tiico Timing belt warning

Hi All; Just a warning to our Tiico owners. I had to go under the timing belt to replace my alternator bracket. I have to note I have a 1983 Westy without power anything and have decided to forego the upper plate/bracket that holds all the accessories and go for a simpler (more original) setup, but that's another story entirely. Nevertheless, I found the dreaded cooked plastic pulley and worn belt! When I did some mileage calculations, lo and behold, about 27,000 miles on the motor. A quick and easy R&R (cover was off already) using the steel pulley and a really good belt and I'm on my way, a happy camper (Bus and boy) again. I would caution all you Tiico owners out there to consider opening up your cover to check to see if you have the steel or plastic system. Do a close checkup and replace as necessary. Parts are cheap and valves flopping around out of sync with your pistons is expensive (see earlier posts). On a happy note, I (and my mechanic) have gotten most of the "kinks" I've either read about or experienced or both out of the Tiico and am happy with the power and reliability of the system. Lots o' miles, lots o' smiles.
