It's even worse on the diesels because there's no throttle plate. Mine had a loud, deep resonance in that same rev range, regardless of whether I was accellerating or just cruising. With the snorkel connected there's still quite a bit of racket, but it doesn't have the same deep drone to it and the overall volume is lower.
