A couple of weeks age I posted the above problem and forgot to post a follow
up on the solution...

Changed the oil to a lower viscosity and the friend is not experiencing the
blow by now.  Seems the rings are taking a little more time to seat than we
expected.
Thanks to Mark Drillock and Boston Bob for their timely and accurate
responses.
