All signs are pointing to a siezed pilot bearing. I wish that I had understood all of this earlier, but it's great to get an education now.

I'll let you all know what I find, and I've learned to get multiple opinions before listening to a mechanic who tells me to ignore a noise. This is the same mechanic who installed the clutch in the first place, and I'm going to call him to see if he'll cover the parts (I know he won't cover the work unless I bring it to him).
