There's a service bulletin -- someone here will have it. I should but I don't. For the '83-84 and maybe earlier, if the regulator fries you're supposed to add a diode in series with one of the pins when you replace it. I presume it's the supply pin but don't know for sure. I also presume the diode is a 4001 or similar.
