From my reading and study of the autotranny vs. the manual tranny, the Vanagon auto tranny is the stronger of the two. Over time you will have less grief with it. You can also overhaul the auto tranny yourself at home, with out haveing to have special jigs, etc, as you do with the manual tranny.
