Hey Joe :-) I got nothing on fixing your axles, but if you are going to lie on the ground for 6 hours under your car you need to find a couple of big corrugated cardboard boxes, open them up, and lay them down under the bug. This will do 2 things: keep you away from the cold, hard ground, and make a slippery path for sliding in and out from under the car. If you can lay down 2 or 3 layers of cardboard, you will be way more comfortable and you'll be protecting your driveway from oil spills. Another cheap and easy tip, free of charge.
