Subject: Cleaning the gas tank
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi all...

Tanks to everyone that have helped me with good advices in cleaning my gas tank.

Special thanks to Steve Gough.

To Whom It May Concern:

My originally problem was (and still is) is loss of power, like lack of gas. I checked the gas from the outlet of the tank and it was full of water and dirt. Pooled out the gas tank, cleaned, installed back on the van, filled with 20 litres (5.3 US gallons) of gas. Turned on the ignition, pump running, no start. Pulled the hose from the gas tank and the gas were running out just fine. Now here is the thing.. As the pump will not self prime and 20 litres of gas in the gas tank is below the level of the gas pump, it will not suck any gas out of the tank.

I loosened the gas pump from it's place (also the wires), disconnected the hose from the pump, pulled the hose down to the level where gas came out, connected the gas pump while holding the hose in same level, turned on the ignition a couple of times (so that gas was pumped out of the pump), connected the new fuel filter (that where connected to the rest of the fuel system), while having the pump hanging down. Cranked the engine till it started. Mounted the filer and the pump in its place.

I do hope this might save others hours of troubleshooting and I was just about to get a new fuel pump.

Sadly for me, cleaning out the gas tank was not the problem with my van. It is still there... loss of power, almost like running on three cylinders. Bought a new distributor cap, rotor, sparkplugs, checked the compression and replaced the vacuum hoses to the distributor. It is running on all four cylinders, but one spark plug is more "dirty" than the others after only a few drives around the block.

I guess it's time for me to spend some $$ and take the van to a "real" mechanic.

Sorry for the lengthy mail, but hope it will be helpful to someone.

Thanks
