Frank,

The brake issue may in fact be a feature of the position of the rod but I have not considered it a serious issue since the brake booster system applies the real force to the brakes. There exist some force against the brake system that is reached where applying additional force will not affect your ability to brake. Even the vanagons with the spongy brake systems achieve that force. As long as the brakes DO NOT fade to the floor it is acceptable.
