I once mentioned to the young (20s) chemist brother of a good friend some of the possible issues involved with carrying around a butane lighter. Few weeks later his brother told me "I heard this god-awful boom and flash and the windows rattled like crazy -- went rushing downstairs to see what on earth happened and met [my brother] coming in white as a ghost." He wasn't convinced about the lighter, so being an experimental chemist took a Bic out in the back yard with a piece of magnesium ribbon wrapped around it, lit the ribbon and retired to the porch to see what if anything happened. His expectations were exceeded...

I'm pretty sure that an A/C unit has a good deal more than a Bic lighter...but how fast and in what direction it comes out, and whether liquid or vapor would all affect the issue. Maybe we should try it a few dozen times and see if there's a pattern?
