Cut about 1/2 inch from the short side of a 6mm allen wrench and it will fit right in there. The pipe can then be pushed down low enough to remove the pump.

OK so I am in the middle of a cylinder head job and feel foolish for even asking the question I did the other day (do I have to remove the headers to get the heads out? of course you do there is no other way!!!), but now as I sit waiting for the JB Weld to set up on the minor (but enough to leak) pitting (60k on those heads) and for the parts I ordered from Ken at Vanagon.com (God bless him and his prompt, courteous service) to come in, I come at last to my question of the day... How the heck do you get the water pump out of this thing??? Those bottom two hex bolts that hold the pipe to the passenger side of the engine are buried deep and the @#$*& crankshaft pulley is in the way... You mean I have to disassemble the pulley? If so how do I hold the engine/crankshaft still while undoing the big nut on the pulley... This all makes me want an aircooled instead of my wasserleaker

Any advice or calming words would be appreciated
