I have a Garmin eTrex Vista.

It is about the size of a large cell phone.

It came with maps of everywhere I've been with it so far (New England and Montreal Canada).

It has no "turn left at the next light" sort of stuff, but it does have an arrow that will point to your next "way point".

It does have a serial connection, witch I have used to make maps of where I've been using 3rd party shareware:

I have an optional handle bar mount, the maps above are of my local town forest bike trails.

It's pretty cool, but not fool proof. If you have a AAA map, and one of these, you would have no excuse for getting lost.
