Dood!

I am using a Sony CDX-M750 with 3 internal crossovers and a healthy 50Wx4 of real watts, 4 infinity 3.5'' speakers in factory locations behind factory grills, a Bazooka 300W sub amp bridged driving a bazooka dual-voice-coil 10'' speaker in a Q-logic enclosure. The compact cube sub sits behind the rear seat facing the rear window -- I would not put a sub in a van facing the front. The front speakers give me excellent imaging. The sub is crossed at 125Hz and the sound is quite impressive. Bach, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd or the latest dance music all sound dynamic and I get a healthy dose of bass down to 20Hz. Yah.. it makes my rear-view mirror vibrate and my nose hairs tingle. Even my mom loved the way her CDs sounded in my Westy. BTW, The sub is small enough so I can easily move it to the floor for camping.

No, I would not omit the front speakers. It's like putting a TV in your house... behind a shower curtain. Put larger 5 1/2 speakers in the front doors, preferably a 2-way separate set up, if you're wiling to hack your precious door panels, quality 3 1/2 in stock rear locations and a small sub behind the rear seat. That would give you excellent imaging and a full-range sound good for any type of music. Any more than that is overkill in a relatively noisy vehicle like the Vanagon.
