A W connector is used by Diesel engines with tachometers. To the best of my knowledge that is what it's for. Next most Vanagons have a blue wire but it goes to the solenoid actuatior wire on the starter. It normally has a little square push in connector different from any other connector in the engine bay. Possibly it doesn't go to the battery but just to the starter.
