Ed, my 88GL had these same symptoms. After a time, I began to notice the
carpet was wet. I checked and it was brake fluid.

The fix was to replace the brake master cylinder, flush the brake lines,
install new brake fluid, and bleed the brakes and clutch line. . I did.

No more wet carpet! No more spongy brakes! Clean fluid throughout the
system.
