I have a 150 lbs worth of 2 dogs and I have two set-up's for them:

1) a four foot 1 x 12 fits behind the two drivers seats with a string tying it to the post of the front table. This keeps them from interfering with us while we drive and also lets them stand with their front paws on the base of the passenger seat for breeze and view.

2) During the shedding season (right now), I have a 1" square netting that ties to each side's curtain cable and effectively partitions off the area behind the back seat. They go in there and stay put. I have a carpet remnant that sits on top of the mattress to keep it free of dog hair and make for easy cleaning. I imaging someone makes a grill to fit that opening too but I tend to try the cheap route.

If you were to partition off the back are for the cats and use something to hold the back cupboard open, I bet you could put a tray in the bottom for a litter box and the other 2 compartments could become cat nests with a terry hand towel. The front would be for the dog and for the most part the cats would have a view and a refuge.

Have a good one,

Eric

This topic is very entertaining since I 'll be traveling from Virginia to SoCal late this summer/fall with a whole zoo in the back of the Carat: three cats plus a 90lb lab mix. The potential fun will be compounded by the fact that our dog has limited brain power and every time a cat meows he 'realizes' there is someone in the van to play with. This happens even when he's asleep and the cats meow ALOT when in the van. How many miles is it to CA?

Our plan is purchase one of the larger wire dog crates for all three cats to ride in. A shelf halfway down would give them some more floor space and a safe place to 'hide' in the back. This will also give room for food, water and a box (joy. a litter box). The dog will live in his large crate and we're going to try and stack them (lashed together) so someone can still sleep in back while tooling down the road.

Does anyone have a better way to handle this - I mean besides making hats out of them? We're going to do some test-runs later this summer and I'd love to have other techniques to try out!

john
