Over 50% percent of electricty in the USA is derived from coal power, so we would be essentially converting our cars to... coal power.

There's a better way, of course.

All we need is room-temperature superconducting materials and cheap fuel cells. Then we can easily convert our Vanagons to quiet electric power.
