I mentioned having this problem on my '82 a while back, and Stan suggested slipping a short length of aquarium hose over the shaft the knob threads onto -- just long enough to be compressed slightly when the knob is put back on. The idea is to add enough friction to make the lock stay in whatever position it's in.

I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, but it makes sense to me!
