Most 87 and later. If it had factory alloys, it had the taller hold
downs and hose.

There are two versions of those spring arms. They were redesigned for
the 205/70 when VW introduced them. One of the hoses is also different
for the wider tires. Get a set of hold downs from a van that had the 205
tires.

So i was all proud of myself for finding a fifth/spare
carat2 style wheel that (almost) exactly matched my
other 4 for $30. I go and get a matching VancoContact
205/65 R15 tire for it today, mounted and balanced...
when i went to swap out my spare tire, i couldn't get
the tray to close!
At first, i thought it was the rims much higher
profile (sticks to the outside of the tire by a couple
inches more) was hitting the shift linkage box, so i
removed the box - same problem.
It seems that the spare tire hold down arms/springs
simply don't give enough. The tray will close within
almost an inch of latching, but no matter how much my
puny arms push, it won't get anywhere near closing.
What should i do about this? I was thinking of
removing those spring arms, but i figure they provide
some sort of safety stop so you don't crush hoses or
something. The main thing that throws me off here is
that on the stock steel wheel with a 205/70 R14, it
closed snugly, but still closed...
I'd really like to use this wheel as a spare, so any
suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Damon
