The air flow meter measures the amount of air entering the throttle body and intake manifold. The fuel injection, it's timing and amount will be off. I would think you would run to rich at times and too lean at times. I've heard this can burn out your heads, cylinders etc. I'd find the cause of the idle problem asap and leave the afm connected. Have you checked the temp gauge, O2 sensor? Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
