Not that mr. Lee needs any verification on this, but i just went through this process to get a long tube to span the width of the rear hatch on my westy. I called a bunch of places, and 1 1/8 tubing is next to impossible to get...

However, as was mentioned, plumbing pipe (which seems to be what Yakima used, anyway) works well, and is cheap. I just also purchased a shower curtain rod sleeve (just a split plastic tube) that i wrapped around the pipe - looks stock, and cost all of $10 for everything.

Gary's racks are, i am quite sure, infinitely cooler, though.
