I have used a portable window A/C in my Vanagon for years, and have been
asked about it at Busses Nowhere near the Arch and other shows.  I use a
small 5,000 BTU unit and it works well.  You must fashion a base that keeps
the weight of the unit off the glass, and a box that sits on the base.
Getting the profile correct is the hard part.  I then use a ratchet strap
going from the cleat in the cargo bay (Westfalia) down to the wheel lip to
hold the unit against the body of the van.
