I got to take one for a spin... the van was loaded up with 5 guys and felt like it had loads of torque. It really was a quality driving vanagon. It had all sorts of suspension mods to give you more of a "sporty" feel, which does bias the seat in those pants, and also had a custom gear ratio 5-sp transmission which i think also does wonders for making a van feel like it has more power. Also, i think the test model was an even higher displacement than the one you quoted (2.4L with a 10:1 CR, i think...)

Having said all that, it pulled strong off of idle and seemed to have a nice, wide power band.

91 octane, though...$$$

It does use all stock FI parts, which is probably a good thing for future mechanics down the line...

Overall, it seemed a good candidate (but i have not driven any conversions at all - just a BusLab 2.2wbx and a Go Westy big daddy engine) -Damon
