Subject: Idle, Stumble, ignition, stumble, ignition, stumble, then OK

On my '87 Westy... A couple of weeks ago my van started the above subject behavior. I did the archive search for Vanagon Syndrome and the AFM fix. That sounded like I was on the right track. I'm not so sure now. Last week, I did the AFM capacitor fix and installed new grounds on the AFM and alternator. I still get the subject performance. At a fellow Listee's suggestion, I moved the new grounds from the right side head to the fire wall... no change.

The engine starts right up and runs but will not idle for very long before it begins to stumble and die. After about the third time of quick shut off (in neutral) and restart the engine idles fine, runs just fine and away we go. Fuel consumption is down by about 25%... I assume it's all the starting and stopping. Several hour-long trips and still no change... I thought maybe the AFM and ECU needed some time to get it together : ) Is this something to do with the sweep arm in the AFM? This occurs with the engine cold or hot. Anyway... I would appreciate some of the List's help. Thanks in advance. -- Stephen Chillicothe, Ohio
