I don't have a Syncro, so can't help on the skid plate, but I would *not* use MTL - use MT90 instead. Although I did use MTL in my van several years ago, the R&P failed a year later, probably not due to the MTL, but I'll never know for sure. I've since learned from the list and from Redline Tech people that MTL is *not* the right oil for the Vanagon, MT90 is. MTL is fine for fwd trannies in the Golf/Jettas, but too thin for the Vanagon. It's not really clear since the MTL is 70W80 and the MT90 is 75W90 - the factory spec is either 80W or 80W90, so *maybe* MTL is ok, but many seem to think (including Redline if you call them (800)624-7958 ) that MT90 is the way to go.

I am now running Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 in my Vanagon - it does not shift quite as well as the MTL did, but is way better than dino oil. MTL has been great in my Jetta for the last 300k kms, now at 480k kms with no problems.
