Subject: 82' diesel transmission swap advice
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hello All,

This is my first post, although I have been keeping my 82 diesel westy going for 3 years with the sage advice found here. Thank you to everyone for their willingness to share advice.

I have acquired a used transmission (high g-force 4 speed) that I need to swap into my van. It is complete with the exception of the main shaft that I need to swap out of my current transmission. What gaskets, bolts, bushings, sleeve, etc. do I need to complete the swap? Any critical advice that is left out of the Bentley manual? Anything else that I should attend to while the vanagon is undergoing the transplant?

I have the 12pt tool for the cv bolts, and the boots are in good shape. Should I get the cv boot kit? The clutch has about 500 miles on it (before the transmission failed). The gearshift is vague. "Ollie" has given about 140k of faithfull service (including a 10K round trip into Mexico from Iowa) and I don't want to have to sue myself for transmission swap malpractice.

Thanks Chris Mugge mugge@mchsi.com 82' Diesel Westy "Ollie"
