Volks, I developed an oil leak during a 600 mile trip a couple days ago. The van was running geat and I think I pushed it a bit hard. When I arrived I noticed an oil smell and oil specks more or less covered the rear hatch. It appears to be coming from the front of the engine. Maybe down between it and the torque converter (auto tranny). I'm looking in Bentley (13.37) and see an oil seal that might be the problem. I'm inclined to think seal because it seems to drip most during the minute or two after the engine is shut off. It stops dripping (or slows way down) fairly soon after shut down. And, it couldn't leak that fast all the time or it'd run dry very quickly. It leaked about a quart on the return 300 miles. That's less than the first half of the trip and I think due to reduced speed. I would appreciate any ideas. If my suspicions are correct, the tranny and engine will have to part company for a while. It appears to be easiest to remove auto tranny rather than lower the engine. Any advice on that? TIA Fred 89 Westy Moab, UT |
