Lots of info on the Vanagon.com website.
Buying info on the Articles and Essays page.
Year by year info on a separate page similarly named.
Year preference is an individual taste matter.
80 to 83.5 were aircooled
81 to 83 diesels were offered (can you say s-l-o-w ?)
83.5 to 85 were 1.9 liter waterboxers
86 to 91 were 2.1 l
Aircooled have non-heater issues on those without the auxiliary gasoline
heaters; water cooled have leaking head issues.
It is my opinion that the waterleakers are more long lived than the
aircooled, at least that is my personal experience. I place a high value
on usable heater/defrosters.
Options and conveniences improved with the years.
I prefer arm rests, power steering, a/c and AT. These are GENERALLY found on
'87 and later. My 2¢ worth.
You don't mention your locale... your wallet will be effected by this...
West Coast is highest,
East is next,
Everywhere else is a crap shoot.
Good hunting!
