The Outer Banks are great! Spent a vacation there a few years ago. Rented a house north of Corolla Light -- drive off the end of the pavement and head north 1 mile along the beach, make a left at the 2nd dune before the big house, head back 3 more sets of dunes, and there you are. Had a Jeep at the time, but nearly got stuck with that. I learned to drive as close the water as you can. Sand is firmer there. Wish I had my Van at the time, would have been nice to have the extra space.

If you can, bring a big 5 gal can of water with you while driving on the sand. When you get stuck, pour it out around your tires and it will firm up the sand. Really.

Oh yeah, when you see the nasty loose stuff ahead, 2 words: ramming speed.
