I'm in the same boat and would only add that since the distance is short you don't need to worry so much about the wire gauge. The resistance of the wire is related to length and gauge so if the length is short the wire gauge is less important. This only matters in that you'll probably have a larger choice of connectors if the wire gauge is a bit smaller.

One other thing would be to measure the voltage at your solenoid pin with the key at START position. I'm getting about 9V. The solenoid has a "12V" stamped on it. The debug procedures in Bentley state a minimum of 8V. Not sure if DIN standards state that solenoids must operate at x% of rated voltage but 9V volts seems pretty wimpy...
