I too had lot of experience w/ 70's and 80's vws when i bought our 86 vanagon. I have found that there is a fair amount of similarity on the vanagon. Things are obviously quite different given the layout of the vehicle, but the parts, and design of things, and overall technology will feel very familiar to you. Some things will make you scratch your head and say, "why the hell did they do that?" I have found having one that is not a daily driver is a lot of fun. This list is a great resource. Many clever people here that can help you learn about the vanagon, and show you easier and cheaper ways to fix it up.
