I have found a very good axle nut removal tool. It is a 7" metal cutting blade by Vermont American, and is super-cheap at your local hardware/home store. Cut the darn thing off with my old circular saw and put on a new one when I was done.

The first time I took off the axle nut, it had been on there a while (14 years, as far as I know), and I bent the big fat breaker bar I bought at sears. Ended up cutting it off anyway. I couldn't believe the local VW dealer in St. Joseph MO had the nuts in stock. Surprise! So, for a few bucks I got the results I wanted. The next time I took off the nuts, they weren't so bad, and came off without damaging my tools. Gotta lube those babies.
