The temp gauge LED has 2 functions. One is to get your attention when the temp gauge reading is too high and the other is to warn you that the coolant level is at least a little low. Since yours blinked when the temp reading was fine, it was most likely due to a coolant level fault.

In a 91, once the LED starts blinking due to a coolant level low fault it will keep blinking until the key is turned off, even if you fill the main coolant tank. Since yours cleared only after the key was turned off that again points to a coolant level low fault.

The bottom line is that the blinking LED probably has nothing directly to do with your hot starting problem.

After blinking for about 20 min. the van shut down and I was able to restart it and drive it home. Now, the van will shut down quite regularly after the engine temp rises to about full operating temp, without the temp light coming on though. The van must sit for several hours before it starts again, then as it heats up it dies. > > I'm getting fuel. I have power into the coil, but no spark out.
