Fred,

I don't honestly know what the theoretical ramifications of mixing synthetic trans fluid with the original dexron III are however...

FWIW,I changed over to synth trans fluid at 90,000kms cos it seemed like a good thing to do.I ran that fluid in the box until about 210,000kms,then drained and replaced with new synth fluid ...just cos I hate the thought of the same fluid going around indefinately.

Anyway, now at just over 250,00kms,the gearbox is still as sweet as ever so obviously it can't be said that gearbox problems will certainly arise should you change to synthetic fluid. So beware any sooth-sayers preaching inevitable doom and gloom ;) Maybe I'm just easy on the gearbox since I still have the original clutch too....damn this Volkswagen reliability :-)
