When I was installing the Haltech FI system on my Vanagon, their temp sensor was a generic one, so I took a standar brass T fitting and cut the long skinny hose on the left rear side of the engine that goes from the plastic loop to the block. it has worked perfectly and no drilling, maybe just a little air bleeding needed for the cooling system. When the laptop is plugged into the haltech system, it reads in either C or F and will change a degree or two once the engine is at operating temp. Since coolant flows through that hose constantly, I think I made a reasonable choice.
