I got the code from my local VW dealer. They ask for a VIN, but it
evidently does not have to match the vehicle with the radio. I gave them
my Jetta's VIN and the radio came from the junk yard. They called back
with the code. No charge.

Why?
It's certainly Vanagon-related, as I'm sure many of us
have these stereos.
I'm personally interested, as I recently bought a used
VW Audio unit to replace the cheesy aftermarket stereo
which formerly inhabited my dash. Despite the 'key'
symbol on the front panel, the VW unit functions fine,
even thru a couple maintenance-related power outages,
though I fear it may someday ask for a code I do not
have. What's up with this?
Is there some hidden workaround for these codes, a
secret we don't want to broadcast or archive here on
the list to be found by crooks, hence the pmail-only
responses?
Without divulging secrets, can you give us the basics
of this whole code business?
