In keeping with my 'Friday Flames' early posting habit; I'd say avoid anything with a Water Cooled engine. That means the best Busses / Vans / Vanagons would have been made between 1950 and 1983 in Air Cooled version. The air cooled have less power but engine rebuilds are about half the cost of a Wasser Boxer engine. I've gotten 150 K miles out of the 2000cc Type IV air cooled with very few problems.
