I think Boston Bob and Robert Lilley have this one covered. The WBX can be made more powerful by addressing the inefficiencies inherent to any motor design, but in some ways unique to the flat-4 engine. By increasing the motor's efficiency it never really works 'harder', it just has more muscle to do the work. Although this is an over-simplification of the solution, Robert Lilley and Boston Bob many educational posts are available in the archives for our retrieval. Chris S.
