Joe, glad to hear everyone is basically OK. Sad for the Van though. One
thing, no matter what......have the wifey go to the doctor and have her
back X-rayed. That is just for the record. it establishes a baseline
should problems appear later. I have been taught a hard lesson lately -
vicariously - but hard none the less. A buddy got slammed in the back
end. he was not going to see a doctor because of the espense, but his
lawyer who came by to check the car climbed his case about it. So he
went. The result .... a $20,000 settlement plus the value of the totaled
vehicle. Now that money came out of the insurance from the party that
hit him. And it turns out that there were soft tissue problems in the
guys back. Old problems aggravated by the force of the impact. Those
things came back to haunt him in the months after the accicent. He was
glad for the unexpected settlement.
A couple of points here. One, protect yourself and your family
financially. Carry that insurance. Second, protect your family. Have
everyone in an accident examined by a doctor. Let him be the judge -
coupled your your input - as to whether something is amiss or not.
Establish the basline by the medical exam. Then if nothing ensues at a
later day, no problem. But if problems develop, then you already have
the base line established. Very important.
I'm not saying sue everybody in sight, but position yourself and your
family well in the event such is needed. The longer you wait, the more
difficult it will become to pursue a settlement if it becomes necessary.
