Subject: How much ATF in Torque Converter
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

I'm putting my transaxle back in the van. I had my TC rebuilt, so it is empty. The rebuilder told me to put about half a quart of ATF in it before I install it. I thought I had seen a reference in Bentley about this, but if I did, I can't find it now. Any advice on this?

I've been scratching my head about how the TC ends up filled with ATF. The image I get is of it only filling halfway because the top half would be airlocked. But I just now went "d'uh", the thing is spinning! So the heavy fluid would be slung to the outside, and the air would escape out the shaft.

So I guess the advantage of having some ATF already in there is to just help it get filled and to provide some lube on the initial run in before it gets filled?

Any other tips on starting and running a rebuilt AT for the first time?

Thanks, Edward
