Why?

It's certainly Vanagon-related, as I'm sure many of us have these stereos.

I'm personally interested, as I recently bought a used VW Audio unit to replace the cheesy aftermarket stereo which formerly inhabited my dash. Despite the 'key' symbol on the front panel, the VW unit functions fine, even thru a couple maintenance-related power outages, though I fear it may someday ask for a code I do not have. What's up with this?

Is there some hidden workaround for these codes, a secret we don't want to broadcast or archive here on the list to be found by crooks, hence the pmail-only responses?

Without divulging secrets, can you give us the basics of this whole code business?
