But do fix that torn boot, or it'll be broke soon enough. My van had a torn boot when I bought it last year. Investigation shows quite a bit more play at that end of the steering rack than at the other. The remains of the boot are full of sand and metal filings. Interestingly enough, the van still tracks straight, but the front tires show uneven wear. The worn rack allows the toe-in to change.

Incidentally, is this a job that has to go to a VW shop, or can any suspension and alignment shop handle a rack replacement in these beasts? I'm not really comfortable with doing front end work myself.
